Individual success in Bugle

Solo prizes won in Bugle, Cornwall, at the annual West of England Bandsmen's Festival

The swcomms Band travelled to Bugle in Cornwall at the annual West of England Bandsmen's Festival on Saturday, June 16th.

This involved a march through the town by all competing bands, a contest throughout the day in the Training, Youth, Fourth, Third, Second and First Sections, finishing with the Championship Section bands.

In most sections, each band must play two set pieces. This year, despite being in the First Section, the band decided to test themselves by entering the Championship Section, playing the set pieces Jubilee March by P Drury and Isiah 40 by R Redhead.

For our march, we opted for the classic Slaidburn by Rimmer.

The band were more than satisfied with how they played, and felt that 4th out of 5 was a fair reflection.

What wasn't expected was to win a number of solo prizes with best solo cornet of the day and best solo cornet in section - both being shared by principal Andy Stark and rising star Meghan Newbury - and best euphonium of the day - won by Les Pearse.

Thanks as always go to our musical director Chris Spreadbury.
